We spent a mind-blowingly beautiful and exhilarating 8-day camping safari in Tarangire, Manyara, Serengeti (we had 4 nights, less would be a terrible shame, more…we could spend a month there) and Ngorongoro, bookended by two nights at Olerai Lodge in Arusha (there couldn't have been a better place to start and finish our journey). Our guide, and today dear friend and brother Gerald was simply fantastic. He was as eager as us to get up at five, head out at six, see the red sun come up over the savannah and roam around until sundown. Our days were so full of incredible adventures, amazing sights, interesting conversations and so many laughs, they felt like weeks. And all this time we were fed like spoiled little princes by our ingenious cook Eliah.
The public camping, especially in Serengeti, is as basic as it gets, but we couldn't recommend anything more! The lions roaring at night in Central Serengeti, the buffaloes grazing at the edge of the camp in North Serengeti, the zebras staring you straight in the eye as you get up at 3am to pee next to your tent in Ngorongoro.
Nothing can compare to these moments, we miss them dearly and we'll cherish them forever. So, thank you from the bottom of our heart to our dear friend Gerald, our wonderful agent Alona and the whole team at Shadows of Africa. While we were planning, Alona gave us the most important and invaluable advice, and we would like to share it here with anyone else planning their dream safari: Spend as much time as possible, as much time as you can in Serengeti! There is nothing like it, not only in Tanzania, there is nothing like it on Earth.
We were sure this was a 'once in a lifetime' kinda deal. But we're already saving up so we can return some time. And see you all again!
