Custom Safari. Two words, I wanted to start with because they were the only people who were able to design a custom Safari, to meet our timeline requirements. Maasai Mara and Serengeti were our destinations. Karen Maki was even able to squeeze in Ngorongoro crater and Amboseli national park, into our 11 day itinerary.

Our trip would have been so incomplete without these 2 destinations. Flight transfers were a breeze. No time was wasted. We stayed at great hotels. I have left the best part for the last. George (Maasai Mara and Amboseli) and Derrick (Serengeti and Ngorongoro) were fabulous guides. Both had their unique traits.

George had years of experience and was able to show us a lot of animals. Derrick through his youthful exuberance, was able to make sure we didn't miss any sightings. He was able to take us to any place there was a sighting. We left with such great memories. We loved Kenya and Tanzania. Fabulous lands. We were amazed by the people we met. We returned with a new perspective of the land and it's people. Only disappointment was not being able to visit the Olduvai gorge.
When planning our trip to Tanzania, we ran across Shadows of Africa. We read other client reviews on TripAdvisor and you guys did not disappoint!

The mastermind behind our tailor-made expedition was Marion, a true maestro of travel planning. We visited Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and the Serengeti by canoe, horseback, hot air balloon, and jeep.

The lodgings ranged from rustic chic to slightly posh and each had a story to tell. The food was on point, the beers were remarkably cheap, and the staff were very attentive. Nothing unites travelers like good food and a cold one. We were fascinated by the “talking” showers where a guy on the other side of the tent flap hoisted fire-heated water from outside so you can feel clean after a long day on dusty roads.
Thank you Lies, Loma and Assad. You all rock!!

What REALLY made the trip, though, was our safari guide, Bryson. I don’t know of many who could handle four middle-aged ladies on an 8-day trek through Tanzanian wilderness armed with only binoculars, cameras, a desire for adventure, and small bladders. Between animal sightings we struggled between staying hydrated and a constant reliance on bush toilets.

Bryson was our encyclopedia of all things Tanzania. He had a knack for spotting wildlife from far away and position his vehicle for excellent game viewing. We saw the migration four times! He joined us every night for dinner and even some breakfasts. Our chats ranged from Tanzanian culture to swapping embarrassing family stories. Bryson also has a grandma-loving side hustle. My mom, aka BiBi, became his honorary grandmother. Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if he had secret lessons in "grandma pampering" before becoming a guide. She recently lost her husband of 60 years, my father, so I can’t even begin to tell you how much it meant to me that he was always looking out for her. In another TripAdvisor post, my travel buddy posted the story of the missing purse. After the hot air balloon company searched the transport vehicle and couldn’t find it, Bryson drove to the airport, searched the vehicle himself, and found it wedged between seats – he truly went above and beyond!

Bryson’s sense of humor was the cherry on top. We laughed so hard, even the animals gave us curious looks.

Lessons for aspiring explorers? Book with Shadows of Africa, make Bryson your spirit guide, go airborne in a hot air balloon (who knew wildebeests looked cute from above?), schedule some nap time between all that wildlife excitement, and for the sake of your derrière, consider those oh-so-smooth flights between parks. Asante sana for creating an experience that left us roaring for more! And yes, Bryson, your wildebeest impressions will forever echo in our hearts.
We enjoyed our trip to Kenya thanks to the impeccably good travel agency Shadows of Africa. They took care of us throughout the trip, we were in constant contact with Mr. Elijah Ngugi from the Nairobi office. A very intelligent, witty, capable and valuable travel assistant. We did not travel as a large group, but as a family of three and we were in safe hands all the time, and we were welcomed and escorted at all checkpoints, airports and hotels. A truly wonderful experience that made our trip to Kenya even better and more memorable.

We would like to highlight one more person - Mr. George who drove us on a safari to the Nakuru and Masai Mara National Parks and was our driver during the game drive in the period from July 14 to 18, 2023. His experience, knowledge, intelligence, friendliness and helpfulness, and with all the refinement and humanity, they further magnified the safari in Kenya. We keep it in our hearts.

At the end of the trip on July 27, 2023, the nephew of one of the agency's directors was driving, but we forgot his name, unfortunately. We would like to thank him for his kindness and kindness. Our next trip to Africa will be through Shadows of Africa for sure! Thank you for the beautiful moments, you meant a lot to us!
